What Are Prepositions?

Prepositions are words that show the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words in a sentence. They often tell us about  location,  time,  direction, or  manner.

Examples:

The cat is  'under'  the table. (Location)

School starts  'at'  8:00 AM. (Time)

We walked  'toward'  the park. (Direction)

She painted  'with' a brush. (Manner)

Types of Prepositions

Let’s break them into categories to make them easier to learn!

1.Prepositions of Place

   These tell  'where'  something is.

In, on, at, under, above, between, beside

Example: The book is  'on'  the shelf.

2. Prepositions of Time

   These tell  'when'  something happens.

At, in, on, during, after, before

Example: My birthday is  'in'  July.

3. Prepositions of Direction

   These show movement.

To, from, into, out of, toward, across

Example: The dog ran  'into'  the yard.

4. Prepositions of Manner

These explain  'how' something is done.

    With, by, without, like

Example: She cut the paper  'with'  scissors.

5. Compound Prepositions

These are phrases that act like single prepositions.

In front of, because of, next to, out of

Example: We stood  'in front of'  the stage.

Prepositional Phrases

A prepositional phrase starts with a preposition and ends with a noun (called the  object). It adds details to sentences!

Example: The keys are  'on the kitchen counter.'

   Preposition:  on

   Object:  counter

   Phrase: on the kitchen counter

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Confusing Similar Prepositions:

In vs. Into: Use  'in'  for location ( in the room ),  'into'  for movement ( jumped into the pool ).

Between vs. Among:  'Between'  for two things,  'Among'  for groups ( between you and me  vs.  among the crowd ).

2. Ending Sentences with Prepositions:

While it’s okay in casual talk (“Who are you going with?”), try to avoid it in formal writing (“With whom are you going?”).

Tips & Tricks to Master Prepositions

1. Picture the Scene: Visualize where things are. If you say, “The ball is  'under'  the bed,” imagine it!

2. Read Aloud: Notice prepositions in books or signs.
